Where to stay in Istanbul?

Hi all, I wanted some advice about Istanbul accommodations. Can anyone recommend an area in Istanbul that is accessible to public transportation and is in a relatively, "safe" neighborhood?

Would there be any cheap and affordable pensions or b&b's in that area? 1 to 2 star hotels? Budget would be around 50 to 60 US dollars for a double room per night.

Ceylan Istanbul (Intercontinental) 200 meters away from Taksim Square, 5 stars hotel with great SPA, gym, hammam! Try booking through Priority Club website, you might find good bargains!
