Money for Oz holiday

Travelling to Sidney next week and the Canadian Imperial Bank says I can use my bank card down under! Anyone had experience using their Canadian bank card in Oz or how about Travellers's checks?

Will be heading for New Zealand and Fiji on the way back and may have the same situation there. Any information appreciated.
