Mardi Gras / Carnival in Rio De Janeiro 2009

I'm thinking of taking a week off and going to the Mardi Gras / Carnival in Rio. I've met some people who have told me it's a wild party and well worth going to. Has anyone here been there?

What's it like? what should I bring? Should I go with friends or would I get more of an experience if I went alone?

I've never been to it, but this is what I've read:

Carnival starts on the 7th of February 2009 and goes until the 24th of February 2009 with the Mardi Gras happening on the last day. If you're only going for 1 week, I'd try to be there for the last week.

Just general advice, but I always find I have a more immersing experience when I travel alone. There should be a lot of tourists there so you should be able to make friends easily.

I was in Rio for carnival a few years ago. It was amazing!!! Just go there, everyone is so friendly you won't need to take anything special (except maybe protection Cheesy

)
