A couple of my friends and I are going to be tripping across the States, east side to west side. We're still deciding whether to hire a car and make our own way across or to take the Greyhound bus. Everyone says the greyhound is an institution and is an experience in itself, but a car could give us more freedom. And shared between 3 people, wouldn't cost much more than the bus.

Advice?

I know this is a one in a million thing, but did you see this news article?

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/americas/07/31/canada.bus/?iref=hpmostpop

A passenger was stabbed to death and beheaded on a Greyhound bus in Canada, by the guy sitting beside him!!!

Don't get scared off, but just be careful. In fact, always be careful when you're travelling. But if you're with 2 friends, you should get some safety in numbers
